Most wanted man Leon Goretzka set for another spell on the sidelines
Hopes of signing Leon Goretzka in January have been handed a major blow after the 22-year-old suffered the recurrence of an ongoing leg problem. The German midfielder is set for another spell on the sidelines, after the Bundesliga club confirmed he faces a series of tests.
‘Leon Goretzka has suffered a recurrence of the injury in his lower leg,’ Schalke posted on Twitter. ‘In order to put these continuous and worsening pains to bed, Leon will undergo examinations over the coming days. Until then, it is unclear as to when Leon will be fit to train and play once again. Get well soon, Leon.’
Goretzka had been heavily linked with a January transfer, with United facing competition from Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Barcelona. Having recovered from a stress fracture that ruled him out for a month, Goretzka featured twice for Domeico Tedesco’s side but he now faces another spell on the sidelines.
The 22-year-old’s future has been the subject of plenty of speculation, as his contract expires at the end of the season. Schalke could be tempted to cash in on him in January should they fail to agree terms on a new deal, but given his latest setback, it’s likely he would be unable to pass a medical.
