Karim Benzema's hopes of making return to France squad are over
Karim Benzema, who has 81 caps for France, has not played for his country in over two years, having become embroiled in an alleged blackmail scandal involving former international teammate Mathieu Valbuena and a sex tape. In July the Court of Cassation – the country's court of final appeals in civil and criminal proceedings - backed his complaint to have the case over the sex tape dropped.
Benzema, 29, claimed last month that he hoped to return to the international fold. However, French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet has declared that he believes a comeback for Benzema in time for next summer's finals is "incontestable".
"You would have to be blind or deaf to not understand that Benzema will be difficult to select right now. It seems to be incontestable to me. We must also say that there are a number of talented players in attack, so the problem is perhaps less so than a few years ago."
Without Benzema, France still have the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Alexandre Lacazette, Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe to call upon in attack.
