Florentino Perez's threat to Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2012: 'If you leave I will sign Lionel Messi'
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez warned the Portuguese that he would buy Lionel Messi to replace him if the Portuguese star left for PSG in 2012.
Ronaldo was reportedly interested in a move to the Parisian club six years ago but Perez issued a remarkable threat, according to France Football. The indomitable club president was reportedly made aware of texts his striker sent to a friend that read: "I want to go to Paris. There, they will really love me. The French will be so happy that I play in their Championship that the media will campaign in my favour for the Ballon d'Or."
Perez weighed in: "Find me a club that puts €200million on the table, and with the money, I'll pay the release clause of Messi to take your place."
Back in 2012 Ronaldo's relationship with then manager Jose Mourinho was strained and he had seen Barcelona emerge as the dominant team in Europe. Whether Messi would have agreed to join the Catalan club's fiercest rival is an entirely different matter but Perez held onto his talisman.
Any longing Ronaldo had to join PSG was quickly snuffed out and given the success he's tasted in the Spanish capital since, perhaps the 33-year-old is grateful for that decision.
How cool was that?
