Prolific Aubameyang, tireless Maitland-Niles: ranking Gunners after Rennes win
Following Arsenal's aggregate victory against Rennes, we analyse the players' performances.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 8.5/10
The Gabonese scored two good goals and set up Maitland-Niles for his goal which sent us through to the quarter-finals. However, the striker missed a number of chances, including two absolute sitters immediately after scoring his second. With a little bit more luck, he could've had a hat-trick or more.
And that's Aubameyang - four sitters today and he has scored two. Gets into great positions but often fluffs his lines.— Orbinho (@Orbinho) March 14, 2019
Aaron Ramsey - 8/10
Our midfield engine has fully returned. Since Emery reverted the Welshman back to his original deeper midfield position, the team has looked a lot more balanced and energetic. The 28-year-old got an assist for the first goal, made 3 key passes, which is more than anyone else on the pitch and made a couple of important tackles and interceptions in the middle of the pitch.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles - 8/10
The young right-back had yet another great performance in the five-at-the-back formation. Ainsley prospers in this set-up as he is not tied to the defence too much and has the manager's permission to go forward and support the attack. He got his first goal at the Emirates and made 5 successful tackles - more than any other player tonight.
My man of the match is Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Worked tirelessly, defended very well & grabbed a goal. Just a month ago he was being slated for ‘laziness’ in the comments section of his Instagram. Now he’s put in back-to-back top displays in Europe & vs United. Hats off to him.— Patrick Timmons (@PatrickTimmons1) March 14, 2019
Alexandre Lacazette - 7/10
The Frenchman played well today, again demonstrating that his main ability is his link-up play with the other attacking players. The 27-year-old registered 7 shots and looked decent overall, even coming deep at times and helping the midfield recover the football.
Mesut Ozil - 6/10
The German was definitely better today than against Manchester United on the weekend but he can still do a lot better. The playmaker created two key chances today, but made a lot of errors and gave the ball away more often than Emery would like to.
Shkodran Mustafi - 5/10
It's almost like the defender wanted Rennes to score tonight. Overall, the German was decent tonight, but as always he made a number of errors that were very dangerous and could've ended up as a goal for the French side. At this point, this is completely unacceptable and Mustafi must be demoted to the bench next game.
lol just look at Mustafi at the end trying his best to cost us the game, if this guy plays another game this season we have failed as a club. Only reason he should be playing is if one of Koscielny and Sokratis are injured.— Dezil Dez (@DezilDezz) March 14, 2019
Petr Cech - 7/10
Nacho Monreal - 6.5/10
Laurent Koscielny - 7/10
Granit Xhaka - 7.5/10
Sead Kolasinac - 7/10
Alex Iwobi - n/a
Henrikh Mkhitaryan - n/a
Lucas Torreira - n/a
