Cech claims Arsenal 'got what they deserved' against Rennes
- Arsenal defeated the French side 4-3 on aggregate in the Round of 16.
- The 36-year-old kept a crucial clean sheet.
- The keeper believes Arsenal's performance was of the highest standard.
In his post-match interview, Petr Cech spoke about the team's performance against Rennes. From his point of view, the Gunners had to give their absolute all to overturn the first-leg deficit. Only in that case would it be somewhat acceptable if Arsenal hadn't gone through.
"We said that if we were meant to go out, we'd go out with a big performance. Sometimes you give a big performance, you do everything right, you are unlucky and you can go out.
"When you perform at the level we did today, you know that you have a chance to go through."
Moreover, Cech highlighted the team's desire to fight on Thursday night. Without an inner passion and grit, nothing would be possible.
"As soon as the game started, you could see the way the team played and fought together. You know that you are giving yourselves a chance. We scored goals at important times and kept a clean sheet, which is what you need in a game like that."
The 36-year-old admitted that the first-leg result was very poor for Arsenal as they had to score at least twice this week. However, thanks to the players and manager's experience, everybody knew exactly what was expected of them and in the end, the Gunners got the result they needed.
"The 3-1 loss away put us in a very difficult situation, but we knew how to deal with that and we got what we deserved."
