Brazilian source: Ituano's Martinelli to become Arsenal's first summer signing
- The Brazilian wonderkid is set to become the Gunners' first summer signing.
- He would cost around £5 million.
- The move will be officially announced in June when the player turns 18.
- A host of Brazilian sides were in contention for the striker.
According to Brazilian media outlet UOL via Metro, Ituano striker Gabriel Martinelli will be a Gunner next season. Arsenal have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with the Brazilian club and will pay around £5 million for the 17-year-old.
The deal will officially be announced in June when the player turns 18. In the meanwhile, he will also obtain an Italian passport so that he would not need a work permit to play in England.
Many connect this transfer to the potential arrival of Edu as the Gunners next technical director. It could well be that the current coordinator of the Brazilian national team gave the Gunners a tip to buy the wonderkid.
According to UOL, several Brazilian sides, including Flamengo, Cruzeiro and Santos tried to buy the 17-year-old but were unsuccessful.
Earlier, Brazilian media outlet Globo Esporte have reported that Arsenal are leading the chasing pack in the hunt for highly-rated Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli.
The report claimed that over 20 clubs are looking to sign the player, with around 15 of them coming from Europe. The striker's recent emergence come to no surprise for the top European sides as the player spent time on trial at both Manchester United and Barcelona.
The Gunners have shown extreme interest in the player by scouting him at a youth tournament and in games at senior level this season.
