Bookies release odds for Mkhitaryan to fly to Azerbaijan for Europa League final
- Micki could be left out of the squad for the Europa League final vs Chelsea due to political issues.
- Armenians are banned from visiting Azerbaijan.
- However, bookies believe he's likely to be a member of the travelling squad to Baku.
Bookies rate Micki's chances to be involved in a trip to Baku at 1.25. The bet for the Armenia international to be left out of the travelling squad is set at 3.25.
Arsenal face a dilemma whether to apply for visa for Henrikh Mkhitaryan who is at risk of missing the final in Baku due to political tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The countries have no diplomatic relations following armed conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region since the 90s.
During his Borussia stint Henrikh did not travel with the team to face local side Gabala in 2015. He also missed the Europa clash vs Qarabag earlier this season due to security concerns.
Thus, Mkhitaryan could have serious problems with entering the country that hosts the final. Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Leyla Abdullayeva made a statement which makes the official position on the matter clearer.
"Many major sports events have been hosted in Azerbaijan, and Armenian athletes have taken part in them. Sports and politics are separate."
However, Arsenal demand guarantees over Micki's safety. The club have released a statement over the matter:
The safety and security of our players is of paramount importance. We are seeking guarantees from UEFA that it will be safe for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to travel to Baku for the Europa League Final, which both Arsenal and Micki require for him to be included within our squad.
"Acceptable guarantees have not been received yet, and we hope that UEFA will be able to supply these promptly. We are of course hugely concerned that the location of the final could lead to Micki not being able to play in a European final."
