Sky Sports reporter Anton Toloui explains why Arsenal don't want to release Laurent Koscielny
- The 33-year-old has snubbed the US tour.
- The player wants to return to France amid interest from Bordeaux, Lyon & Rennes.
- He has 1 year left on his deal with Arsenal.
- The Gunners are looking for a new centre back in summer.
- Anton Toloui claims Arsenal want a new signing to play alongside Koscielny in the heart of the defence.
Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel with the team to the United States. The Gunner wants to return to his motherland to finish his career after almost a decade at the Emirates. The 33-year-old has been allegedly offered a long-term deal in France.
“You can see why [Arsenal fans like Koscielny],” Anton Toloui said. “He’s obviously been there since 2010 I think. He’s been a magnificent servant, obviously he’s had his injury problems. But he’s the one they thought, obviously captain and leader, he’s the one that they were looking to be the defensive rock this year.
“All the Arsenal fans are getting in touch with us telling us they wanted to sign a centre-back to play alongside Laurent Koscielny, not replace Laurent Koscielny. I think that’s going to be the surprise to Arsenal fans this lunchtime is the fact that ‘hang on a second, we thought he was the one we could rely on this season and yet he’s the one who’s looking into other options’.
“There are reports in France that he has been offered a longer contract, Bordeaux looking at him and that kind of thing. He probably wants to look at his own long-term security and if he knows he’s only going to get a year-by-year contract at Arsenal, potentially wanted to move on. But this is a huge blow for Arsenal.”
