Merson: Playing three at the back 'suits all of the defenders'
- The ex-Gunner believes our centre-backs aren't that good to be starting in a pair.
- The former midfielder claims having 3 defenders is beneficial for the whole team.
- Such a formation would also suit Tierney.
Speaking with Sky Sports, Paul Merson explained why he thinks we could see a return of the three-at-the-back formation in the not-so-distant future.
"When you’re looking at them [Arsenal] and you’re naming them players, I wouldn’t be surprised if he [Emery] started going to a three at the back.
"He can come out and play, you’ve got Tierney playing as one wing-back.
"Very much [that suits Luiz], I think it suits all of the defenders.
"If you have three centre-halves playing there it gives all of them something to fall back on.
"If Tierney can get forward he can play, so he’ll want to get forward.
"They’ll want to bomb forward down the other side and they can score goals."
