Robert Pires: 'We need English players because we are in England'
- The former Gunner believes it's very important to have homegrown talent.
- English players have a mentality which fits the Premier League best.
- Arsenal need players like Martin Keown, Ashley Cole, Ray Parlour, etc.
Arsenal great Robert Pires believes English players are the better fit for the Premier League than anyone else:
"We need English players because we are in England and nobody else has grown up with this mentality. You need to be born here. It’s very nice when you get to discover new countries but for me when you play in England you need English players.
"It’s a different time. But I used to play with David Seaman, Lee Dixon, Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Ashley Cole, Ray Parlour… We’re talking about six English players in the team. We need similar players. Of course, I respect the Arsenal philosophy but we are in the Premier League and it’s so tough every weekend."
And the Premier League partially share Pires' sentiment because there is a limit of the players you can bring in from other countries. According to the Premier League rules, the maximum squad size is 25 players. And a club can only have 17 non-'homegrown' players in each club squad. Currently, the Gunners have 14 non-'homegrown' players in their first team.
