DraftKings and Delta partner to offer free gambling, politicians consider in-flight sports betting
Delta Air Lines has announced a partnership with online bookmaker DraftKings that will offer customers a new gaming experience. SkyMiles members will be able to play free games via Delta Sync Wi-Fi as a result of the agreement, which was initially alluded to by Delta CEO Ed Bastian last month.
DraftKings-branded games will be accessible on seatback displays, and the collaboration will provide a variety of free-to-play casino-style games, including an extension of blackjack and other current services. However, Delta has stated unequivocally that the deal does not include real-money betting. According to the airline, "offerings available in violation of Federal, State, or local laws" will not be made.
Although real-money gambling is still illegal on commercial flights in th United States, it is lawful at airports in states where gambling is authorized.
Nonetheless, some legislators are working to break these limitations. Representative Christopher Rosario of Connecticut submitted House Bill 6051 in January to allow and control in-flight sports betting for flights that originate or arrive in the state.
If HB 6051 is approved, all in-flight sports wagering must abide by Connecticut's current gaming laws. The plan preserves existing gaming compacts with the state, including those with the Mohegan Tribe of Indians, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, and the Connecticut Lottery Corporation.
