You've Jota be kidding me!
Alright Reds, little old grumpy me here again. This week's rant is about what I would consider crazy comparisons between Jota and Ronaldo.
I absolutely love what Diogo has done since joining us and his attitude. I just can't compare him to Ronaldo! He isn't at that level and let's be honest here Reds, he never will be. Now don't take this as me having a dig at Diogo or that I'm saying I don't like him. I'm not having a go and I do really like him and his work since he joined, but let's use a little perspective here and not get carried away with the nonsense journalists report.
Since the age has of 15, both Ronaldo and Messi were already streets ahead of any player around them. Both Barca and Utd(before that, Sporting) knew they had very special and rare talents on their hands. Messi was breaking into the first team at 16 and Ronaldo at 17 having just moved there from Portugal , and they were as good if not better than many of the first team players around them, talent like that isn't learned, its natural. And unfortunately, Diogo isn't at that level, he's a player who is growing and progressing nicely and probably better than many at his age, but players don't grow and progress to Ronaldo and Messi levels, that just doesn't happen.
Pele, Charlton, Dagleish, Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane and Gerrard, these are generational players that make an impact from a young age. Same goes for Messi and Ronaldo, they've been tearing it up since their mid to late teens and never went off the boil. All these players are an elite class, known as the greatest players to ever have played the game. As much as Diogo has blown me away since his arrival, he's not in that bracket.
Mo and Mane, now there's a realistic aim for Diogo! 2 players who like Diogo found the perfect club, team, fans and manager. These players are in the bracket below Messi and Ronaldo, they're world class players who although not at the same level as the above mentioned, they would still walk straight into any team on the planet and make them better. That's what I would consider a realistic aim for him and an achievable one providing he keeps working like he does.
I don't know about our users as I only speak for myself here, but if Diogo reaches the ambitions I have for him, I'd be delighted. As we already have an amazing team full of world class players like, Ali, Trent, Virg, Robbo, Gini, Fabs, Hendo, Thiago and our amazing front 3 of King Bobby, Mane and Mo, these are all players whom are considered to be amongst the best on the planet in their positions.
Diogo isn't there yet! He's started very very well though and I genuinely think he may continue to improve over the next few years. He's going to have a few bad spells over the coming season and next season too, but we must not do what some fans have been doing to Bobby. We can't turn on him and want him gone when those bad spells come, as although the players aren't on these apps and sites, fans slating them on social media does get back to them and does affect their confidence and in turn their performances.
Chances are, when Bobby regains his form, Diogo may not play as often as we've seen this season, plus we have to take heavy rotation into account too. Next season that won't be done as much as the schedule won't be so compressed, so we need Diogo to keep his head down and keep working. Who knows, maybe he's another Salah and this is what he's gonna be for the entirety of his stay with us, but that's quite a rare thing, but it's possible.
Anyway, I think the comparisons to Ronaldo are silly really, maybe his importance to the Portuguese team as he gains more experience could be as important as Ronaldos is now, and if he keeps progressing as he is, he will most likely be by far their best player once Ronaldo retires. And because of his young age and all the potential he seems to possess, he may become a vital player for us too. But baby steps Reds! Let's not get too carried away, he's not going to be a player of the ilk of the legends of world football I mentioned earlier, but he may go down in LFC folklore and become our own Portuguese legend and be spoken about for years to come.
Anyway, that's it Reds, I've said my peice but feel free to disagree. And would you look at that, I didn't swear once the whole way through🤷🏻♂️
