City of Bilbao braced for British invasion ahead of all-Premier League Europa League final
The Spurs vs Man United clash will take place on May 21.
Bilbao is preparing for a massive influx of over 80,000 Manchester United and Tottenham fans ahead of the Europa League final, with local authorities and businesses anticipating an event unlike any the city has hosted before.
Both clubs secured their spots in the final after victories over Athletic Bilbao and Bodo/Glimt, giving them a last chance at European glory following disappointing domestic seasons.
Despite sitting 16th and 17th in the Premier League, Man United and Spurs now have a golden opportunity to qualify for next season's Champions League — and fans are desperate to be there.
However, travel and accommodation costs have skyrocketed, with flights from London reaching £668 return, and even coach journeys taking over 26 hours.
Hotel availability is also at a premium, with room rates soaring up to seven times their usual price and one budget hotel listing a no-breakfast room for nearly £2,800.
Many supporters are expected to travel without tickets, seeking entry through sponsors or agencies, while some fans are exploring alternative routes like driving, which still incurs high costs via the Channel Tunnel.
Bilbao's hospitality industry welcomes the tourism boom, although concerns remain about possible closures near the stadium due to unpredictable police action on matchday.
Local business owners have criticised recent enforcement tactics, citing financial losses during previous matches.
Meanwhile, fan zones have been designated — with Spurs supporters set to gather in Parque Ametzola and Mann United fans in Parque Etxebarria. Despite the challenges, the city is bracing itself for a football-fuelled frenzy that could prove both profitable and chaotic.
