'I just absolutely wanted to never do it': Per hates isolation as he has to work 9-to-5 now
"It's really important to meet people and I cannot do that physically right now," Per Mertesacker told Ian Wright in a Youtube interview when asked to open up on his work at Arsenal Academy.
"I work more from nine to five now and not weekends. I miss the training nights with youngsters. So it's like a Monday-to-Friday corporate job, 9 to 5.
"That's something I wanted never to do. I just absolutely wanted to never do it.
"I'm trying to get in touch with as many people as possible... between 9 and 5, really."
Well, a corporate world would probably suit Mertesacker.
It's not difficult to imagine the BFG at a white-collar nine-to-five job, in fact. Just look at his reading glasses: he looks more like an accountant than a football coach!
However, he is certainly much better at nurturing football talent at Hale End as the success of Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka has proven this season.
Per looks full of energy though and will hopefully bring even more selection headache to Mikel Arteta next season.
