GAMSTOP reports 31% surge in self-exclusions among under-25s
GAMSTOP, the UK's national self-exclusion initiative designed to help individuals control their online gambling, has alerted partners to a significant increase in self-exclusions among individuals under 25, highlighting this group as at the highest risk of gambling-related harms.
In the second half of 2024, registrations from under-25s surged by 31% year-on-year, with this demographic now representing 24% of new registrants.
Overall, GAMSTOP observed a 14% rise in self-exclusion registrations, driven partly by major summer sporting events like the UEFA Euro Championships and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Since its launch in April 2018, a total of 532,484 individuals have registered with GAMSTOP, equating to over 1% of the UK’s adult population. Notably, 48% of new registrants in the latter half of 2024 chose the maximum five-year self-exclusion period, reflecting a demand for longer-term protection.
In response to feedback, GAMSTOP has introduced a ‘5-Year Auto-Renewal’ option, aiming to provide vulnerable consumers with extended safeguards against online gambling.
