71% of adults in Sweden participated in real money gambling in 2024 - report
The Swedish Gambling Authority, known as Spelinspektionen, has released the findings of a study examining the gaming habits of Swedes, conducted late last year. Partnering with research company Enkätfabriken, the annual Public Opinion Survey surveyed just over 1,600 respondents in November 2024.
The results indicate that 33% of Swedes engage in gaming activities on a weekly basis, with 71% of these players having wagered real money at some point during 2024. Lotteries and numbers games remain the most favoured forms of gambling, with a notable 84% of respondents indicating they have participated in these activities.
Moreover, the study sheds light on the motivations behind gambling, with fun and entertainment cited as the primary reasons by 69% of participants. The prospect of significant winnings followed closely behind, noted by 40% of respondents.
Interestingly, data from 2024 suggests a slight decrease in gambling participation overall. While 75% of Swedes reported having gambled in 2023, this marks an increase from 72% in 2019, indicating evolving trends in gaming habits across the nation.
