Rotterdam court orders Betsson to repay over €500,000 to Dutch gambler
The Rotterdam District Court has ruled that Betsson must repay a Dutch gambler over €385,000 in losses incurred when the company operated without a local gambling license. Including statutory interest and legal fees, the total amount exceeds €530,000.
The case, filed in 2024, targeted former Betsson operators BML Group Limited and Corona Limited, which had run Betsson, Kroon Casino, and Oranje Casino in the Netherlands without proper authorization.
On April 9, 2025, the court declared the gambling agreement null and void. Betsson did not appear in court, leading to a default judgment. The judge ordered repayment of €385,378 plus €144,622 in interest dating back to 2014, and an additional €5,751 in legal costs.
According to Dynamiet Nederland, which represented the gambler, this sets a precedent: affected players not only can reclaim losses but also receive significant interest.
Earlier this year, Betsson lost a similar case and was ordered to repay €119,634. At the time, the court rejected Betsson’s request to await answers from the Dutch Supreme Court, stating each case is unique.
Meanwhile, Betsson’s 2024 acquisition of the licensed Dutch platform Goldrun has yet to receive regulatory approval.
