U.S. coach opens up on Pulisic's role in his team
- The Americans will start their Gold Cup run on 19 June.
- Pulisic is their main star.
- Unlike in his club, he will play as central attacking midfieder.
The U.S. national team's manager Gregg Berhalter has revealed that he does not intend to use Christian Pulisic in the way he was positioned at Borussia Dortmund.
At the German club, the Chelsea newcomer was playing on one of the wings.
However, in the international games, Pulisic will be used as a central attacking midfielder, Berhalter has said.
"People are asking, 'Is he going to be wide? Is he going to be central?'
"My idea is that he'll play central but move wide sometimes. We want him in between the lines, being able to attack players, go at players, and then help other people get goalscoring opportunities.
"We think he can do it from a central position better. But that may not be the case when we actually see him.
We know he has one-on-one ability out wide, so that's in the back of our minds already. Now it's just gathering information and saying, 'Let's work with these guys. Let's see exactly everything they have. Let them form us a little bit.' The product of that I think will be much better."
Pulisic has missed the last friendly games for his country before they start their defence of the Gold Cup.
Maybe it's for the best, as the U.S. got beaten in both of them. After a 1-0 defeat to Jamaica, they were battered 3-0 by Venezuela, considered one of the weakest South American sides.
Obviously, they need Pulisic. We need him as well, though, and will very much hope that he will not suffer another injury as he often did this season.
