Kompany picks Van Dijk ahead of Terry as best centre-back in Premier League history
- The ex-City captain acknowledges the impact the Dutchman has had on Liverpool.
- That's why he is the best, even though he has not played or won as much as Terry.
- Rio Ferdinand is mentioned as another player in that regard.
Vincent Kompany was asked to name the best centre-back in the Premier League's history ahead of his testimonial with Manchester City.
Former City player admits Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk has not had as much time on the pitch as John Terry and Rio Ferdinand but what he has done to the team is even more amazing because of this:
"I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, he’s not been on the scene as long as Terry, Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he’s shown in the last few years.
"He's shown if he had been around longer he’d have been at the top for a long time. The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after are a completely different setup. I’ll give him that one."
The Dutch defender joined Liverpool only in January 2018 and has made 78 appearances, scoring 8 goals. By comparison, John Terry played for Chelsea for almost 20 years, making 717 appearances and registering 67 goals. And that's before we start counting trophies, including 5 Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph in 2012.
