Bartomeu's reign at Camp Nou was rich in controversies. A Reddit user abhijeetgupta23 recalls the biggest ones after the Catalan's resignation.
Reddit abhijeetgupta23 has taken to the web to name top eight of the 'worst' things Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board of directors had done at Barcelona before their resignation on Tuesday.
1. "Using a social media company to demean their own players".
The infamous 'Barcagate' scandal. The club was accused of hiring a PR company to create fake accounts on Twitter and Facebook in order to denigrate club legends liek Leo Messi, Xavi, Gerard Pique, Josep Guardiola and even ex-president Joan Laporta.
We sold 23-year-old Arthur for €72m to Juventus and brought in 30-year-old Pjanic for €60m. The price tags are clearly inflated and the timing was suspicious, as the deals were agreed a few days before the end of the 2019/20 fiscal year. It's believed that the two clubs arranged the transfers as they needed to balance their accounts.
Initially, Coutinho was meant to play in Andres Iniesta's position, while Griezmann was brought in to serve as a centre-forward. Clearly, the two players don't fit the profiles Barca wanted to cover.
Most of the players Barca have bought in the past five years failed to adapt and ended up leaving Camp Nou. Out of the 28 players signed since 2015 (except those who joined this summer), only nine are still at the club: Umtiti, Lenglet, Griezmann, De Jong, Neto, Braithwaite, Coutinho, and Dembele.
Thiago was sold for €25m, now he's rated at €49m by Transfermarkt. Cucurella was sold for €10m, now rated at €20m. Grimaldo was sold for €2.1m, now rated at €28m. Monchu is on loan at Girona.
6. "Reacting to problems after they occur completely, instead of solving them when the first sign of crisis is visible."
Ernesto Valverde's sacking could be used as an example here. There were clear signs that the coach couldn't lead Barca to European success after being eliminated by Roma and Liverpool from the Champions League despite having a three-goal advantage both times.
Instead of firing Valverde in the summer after the embarrassment in Liverpool, so the new coach would have the chance to spend the pre-season with the team, Bartomeu waited for another six months and got rid of the coach in January when Barca were about to enter the most important stage of the season.
The Catalans snatched Malcom from Roma after losing to them in the CL. Paulinho was brought from China for €40m (!) and was sold the next summer for the exact same amount. Mina was brought to the club because of Barca's ties to his agent. The Colombian got to make only six appearances for us before leaving.
