Luka Modric defends Messi: 'He can't do everything by himself'
- After leading his team to victory against Argentina 3-0, Luka Modric spoke to Argentinian press
- The Croatian midfielder came to a defence of Lionel Messi
"Messi is an incredible player but he can't do everything alone," Modric explained to Argentina's TV Publica. "In football you need help and it can't be done alone. Although he is great, great but it can't be done alone."
"The way we played helped today too. We closed the gaps so [Javier] Mascherano couldn't pass the ball in the beginning and then later when we got our rhythm of the game we played very well. I wish Argentina good luck. We are going to beat Iceland for them."
Modric also revealed that Croatia's plan was to block Argentina from delivering the ball to Messi: "This result and Argentina`s poor display was due to our good game, our compact block all over the pitch, particularly when we didn't have the ball."We cut off Messi, stopped him receiving the ball. He's their most dangerous player."
Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli has admitted Croatia's tactics worked: "We weren't able to find Leo. We work all the time with the aim of getting Leo the ball, but our opponents work all the same to try and make sure it doesn't reach him."
