Riqui Puig grabs all the headlines after impressive performance vs Milan
- The 18-year-old received praise from both Valverde and his counterpart Gattuso
- The youngster has already been dubbed as the new Iniesta
Riqui Puig entered the pitch in the second half of the Milan match, replacing somewhat unvisible Paco Alcacer. The 18-year-old played only 45 minutes but still managed to impress both the fans and the coach. Moreover, even the rival side's boss, the famous Gennaro Gattuso didn't remain unfazed.
That's what the Italian specialist had to say after the match, as quoted by Marca: "Riqui Puig is a spectacle. Gattuso said after the game."I am amazed to see a lad with the face of a child treat the ball like that. I see that he feels football inside him and what he did was like poetry."
Puig's own coach, Ernesto Valverde even insisted the 18-year-old has a huge future ahead of him, as quoted by Marca: "I am very pleased with Riqui [Puig] and his performance. Puig, Juan Miranda and other players from the B-team all impressed me against very strong opposition. I trust that not only will they form part of the future for Barcelona, but also part of the present.”
There is no wonder that the talented youngster has even appeared on the cover of Monday's edition of the Catalan newspaper 'Diario Sport'. The headline reads: 'Riqui Puig has been born as a star.'
Marca writer Xavi Hernández has previously described Puig as the new Andres Iniesta in the making. The comparisons were made after the youngster became the first to wear the legendary No.8 shirt left by the midfield maestro. 'The 18-year-old bore an uncanny resemblance to the iconic playmaker, who now plays his trade in Japan,' Hernandez wrote.
As for the youngster himself, he remains calm and humble in light of these comparisons. He reveals, as quoted by Marca: "That is far away. At 18 I still have a long way to go but to equal Andres is impossible."
The fans also expressed their love for Puig after the Milan match even though the Catalans unfortunately lost 1-0 thanks to a last-minute goal from Andre Silva. Barcelona Live user Jess Asamoah is also hopeful that Puig should be promoted even at the expense of Denis Suarez:
And what's your opinion on Riqui Puig? Will he be promoted this season?
