Arthur becomes Blaugrana new No.8
- The Brazilian receives the legendary No.8 shirt in Blaugrana provisional squad
- Other newcomers also have their numbers sorted: Malcom takes No.14
Looks like Barcelona have a new No.8 in their ranks as Arthur Melo was granted this legendary shirt worn by Andres Iniesta who spent sixteen years at the club. Blaugrana former captain, by the way, proves he has still got it despite being already 34 years old as he scored a magnificent goal for his new Japanese club Vissel.
There were rumours that the 21-year-old Brazilian could receive the No.8 shirt somewhat confirmed by the recent video footage of another newcomer, Arturo Vidal's presentation at Barca. The young midfielder has impressed significantly during the US-tour, having scored a brilliant long-range goal in his debut against Spurs in July.
Other Blaugrana new signings have also received their numbers: Malcolm inherited Philippe Coutinho's No.14 shirt while the elder Brazilian has recently become the club's new No.7. Clement Lenglet will wear the No.15 jersey which previously belonged to Paulinho while Arturo Vidal has received the No.22 kit. Curiously though, that is the same number his namesake Aleix wore.
There have been several changes made in regards of the numbers of other players: Rafinha takes the No.12 shirt which could possibly indicate that he is going to stay at Barcelona despite being linked with Inter Milan return while Thomas Vermaelen moves to No.24 having previously worn the No.25 shirt.
The fans, meanwhile, believe Arthur is too young to wear 'such a burden'. Agree with this opinion?
Vidal should get #8, not Arthur. Keep that boy as far from the Iniesta comparison as possible. Let the experienced inherit that heavy shirt. Too soon.— Ramzi ⚽Ⓜ (@footballmood) August 6, 2018
