Modric admits he would have prefered if Messi and Ronaldo attended FIFA gala
- Real Madrid midfielder won FIFA The Best award at the expense of his former teammate
- Barca No.10 was sensationally snubbed
- Neither Messi nor CR7 showed up, however, the Argentine had a personal reason to do so
Luka Modric admits he would have prefered having both Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo attending the FIFA gala on Monday night and seeing him winning the most prestigious The Best award. The Croatian won the precious accolade surpassing the likes of Mohamed Salah and his former Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo.
Goal quote Modric as saying: 'Everyone has their own reasons. Obviously, I would have liked them to be here but they aren't.'
Cristiano didn't attend the UEFA awards which were held a couple of weeks ago either. Messi initially was going to attend the FIFA ceremony, however, on Monday morning it was reported that he had to stay in Barcelona because of an unknown family matter.
Modric becomes the first player to win FIFA The Best award apart from Messi and Ronaldo in a DECADE. When asked whether he deserved this accolade, the Croatian said: 'I don't want to enter into the debate of whether it is deserved or not. I just want to thank all the people that voted for me for their support and continue as I have until now.'
Modric won the Champions League with Real Madrid for a third consecutive time. Messi, meanwhile, snatched the domestic double and scored more goals than any other player across the European top five leagues.
