According to Catalan television channel TV3, Barca director of sports, Eric Abidal, had dinner with Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt in Amsterdam last week to try to convince him to join Barca.
The source also claims that Abidal had several telephone conversations with de Ligt's teammate, Frenkie de Jong.
Renowned Sunday Times reporter Duncan Castles recently revealed during the most recent ‘Transfer Window Podcast’ that Ajax will be unable to keep both their precious assets, Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong. "I think that Marc Overmars at a shareholders meeting said ‘Well, we managed to retain them this season, but we are not going to retain them forever. We know we’re going to have to sell them'," Castles said.
Barcelona have long been targetting 19-year-old centre-back De Ligt as they consider him to become Gerard Pique's eventual heir given the veteran defender's age and recent crucial mistakes. According to the Catalan newspaper Diario Sport, De Ligt could cost between 60 and 70 million euros, however, Juventus are reportedly in a better position to land him, as per the Italian media.

De Jong, meanwhile, impresses thanks to his exquisite skills and incredible versatility. He is priced at 100 million euros, according to Diario Sport, however, there have been rumours that the 21-year-old has already reached an agreement with Manchester City.
