- Barcelona board contacted Real Betis coach because of Valverde's doubts over the Sassuolo striker's transfer.
- Valverde was unsure if the player will fit into his system.
- Setien's positive description of the Ghanaian was convincing enough for Barca coach to greenlight the move.
Diario Sport have revealed the decision-making process that has led to Kevin-Prince Boateng's signing on Monday. According to the Catalan news outlet, the Ghanaian forward wasn't on the list of potential candidates mere three days ago as Carlos Vela, Alvaro Morata and Cedric Bakambu were the three main options considered by the club. However, Barcelona decided against signing these players for various reasons turning their attention to the 31-year-old former AC Milan man.
Ernesto Valverde wasn't convinced at first as the manager had doubts regarding Boateng's ability to smoothly enter the squad. Then, Pep Segura, Eric Abidal and Ramon Planes decided to consult with current Real Betis coach Quique Setien who has worked with Kevin-Prince at Las Palmas. The manager spent two years in the Canary Islands in 2015-2017 and Boateng featured for the team in 2016-2017.
The 60-year-old gave a very favourable description of the forward saying that he is very professional and able to put on great displays against the most difficult opponents. Diario Sport understand that Setien's words have persuaded Valverde who agreed to welcome Boateng to the Camp Nou. The deal has been completed very quickly and the move has been officially confirmed on Monday evening.
Kevin-Prince Boateng arrives from Sassuolo on a loan deal with an option to buy the 31-year-old for €8m at the end of the season. Boateng spent the last four seasons changing the Serie A, the Bundesliga and La Liga clubs. The Ghanian has scored 5 goals and provided 2 assists in 13 matches this season in the Serie A and Coppa Italia.
