Athletic Club end Barcelona's amazing goal-scoring run
- Barca have scored in their last 37 consecutive league games.
- The last match that ended goalless for the Catalans was the draw against Getafe in February 2018.
Unfortunately, Barcelona were unable to score against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night earning a single point at the San Mames. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and others couldn't create danger in front of the hosts' goal, thus, ending the 37-match uninterrupted goal-scoring run in the Spanish league:
Ter Stegen, Roberto, Mina, Digne, Alba, Rakitic, Busquets, Coutinho, Alcacer, Messi and Suarez featured in the goalless draw against Getafe exactly one year ago on February 11th, 2018. The Catalans were pressing hard with 79% of possession and 12 shots in total with 6 of them being on target. The stats of the tonight's clash are a bit less convincing as Barca had 67% of the ball with fewer shots than Athletic: 10 (2) against 13 (5).
Thankfully, Marc-Andre ter Stegen was there to rescue a point for his side. The German keeper parried extremely dangerous shots from Markel Susaeta and Inaki Williams to give hope to his teammates. Barca, however, looked tired and sluggish with Messi not being 100% ready, Dembele returning from an injury and Suarez, Vidal and Coutinho simply not having their best day.
Thus, Barcelona go six points clear at the top of the table with Real Madrid in the second place. Los Blancos have beaten their neighbours Atletico on the 23rd Matchday 3-1 getting ahead of Diego Simeone's side. Barcelona's next match takes place on February 16 as the Catalans face Real Valladolid at Camp Nou in the 24th round of the league. At the same time, Real Madrid will take on Girona at home.
