Roberto remains optimistic: 'We always knew Real Madrid would challenge us. But we are going well'
- Blancos are now Barca's closest rivals for La Liga title as they are six points behind the Catalans.
- Sergi Roberto: 'We will look to keep this advantage until the end of the season.'
- He also refutes claims Barca are struggling following the run of the consecutive draws.
- The defender continues: 'We are still six points clear in La Liga and in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey so we are going well.'
Barcelona's disappointing stalemate against Athletic Club on Sunday's night didn't allow the Catalans to extend their lead on top of the La Liga table. The Madrid derby resulted in Blancos' favour so they have emerged as Barca's closest rivals for the league title. Thanks to Barca's draw, there are now 'only' six points separating the two sides.
Nevertheless, Blaugrana versatile defender Sergi Roberto stays calm despite the pressure. Diario Sport quote him as saying: "We knew they [Real Madrid] would be challenging this season. Now they are ahead of Atleti and in good form but the reality is that we are still first and we will look to keep this advantage until the end of the season."
He also responds to the criticism following Barca's the concerning run of consecutive draws: "The run of draws? Well, we are still six points clear in La Liga and in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, so we are going well."
Barcelona's hectic schedule saw the Catalans playing twice a week since early January. This is the first time when they don't have a midweek game as they re-start their Champions League campaign only on 19 February with a trip to Olympique Lyon. In La Liga, Barca face Sevilla and Real Madrid away on 23 February and 2 March respectively.
