Mundo Deportivo Exclusive: Barca in good position to land Alaba after first contacts with Bayern Munich
- Alaba is seen as a good alternative for Betis' Firpo, whose arrival looks difficult.
- The Austrian has only two more years left of contract and is unlikely to renew it.
- Bayern are keen to make significant changes to their squad ahead of the next season.
- Barca are said to have contacted the Bavarians at a good time.
- Although the official response was no, the Catalans believe a deal is still possible.
According to an exclusive report from Barcelona-based Mundo Deportivo, the Catalans have already contacted Bayern Munich over David Alaba's possible transfer. Although the official response has been no, Barca are aware it is just a formality and are set to start negotiations for the player. All in all, Blaugrana are confident that the deal remains possible.
The Austrian has only two more years left of contract with the Bavarians and is reportedly unlikely to sign a renewal. In order not to risk losing him for free at a later point, the German club are said to be ready to offload the 27-year-old this summer already.
Moreover, following Theo Hernandez' €80m transfer from Atletico Madrid, keeping Alaba at the club isn't seen as a priority. Both players occupy the same position and considering the high price paid for the ex-Colchonero, it is likely that Hernandez will be entrusted with the starting spot for the next season.
In fact, Bayern are set to significantly reshuffle their squad ahead of the next season with the likes of Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Mats Hummels already leaving the club. David is said to be aware of the plans and doesn't mind changing clubs in this transfer window.
As a result, the Austria international could end up as Jordi Alba's competitor for the left-back position next season. Although Blaugrana have been heavily linked with Real Betis' Junior Firpo, the 22-year-old's current club are said to be asking for €25m in return, a price Barcelona are unwilling to pay.
Besides, Alaba is a more versatile and experienced player. He can also play as a centre-back or a defensive midfielder. For example, Pep Guardiola used him in that roles from time to time while still coaching in Bundesliga.
David Alaba's 2018-19 record across all competitions:
- 44 games
- 3 goals
- 3 assists
- 1.6 shots per game
- 0.8 aerial duels won per game
