Samper still bitter about not succeeding at Barca: 'I would have liked more opportunities'
- Samper joined Japanese club Vissel Kobe in March this year.
- Barca are set to take on the 24-year-old's current club later this week.
- The midfielder regrets not making it at Camp Nou.
Sergi Samper is yet another example of good youth players failing to make the transition between the B and the first team. The midfielder had been promoted to the first team back in 2016 but left immediately on loan to Granada. Then, next season, followed another loan, this time to Las Palmas.
However, the two loan spells ended up hurting the player's development instead of helping it, as the Spaniard suffered a series of injuries. As a result, the 24-year-old played only 23 games for Granada and five for Las Palmas without scoring a single goal.
When he returned to Barca for the 2018-19 season, Valverde ended up using Sergi in only one Copa del Rey match but the player was forced off the field with an injury, yet again. As a result, Barca terminated his contract in March 2019 and as Samper agreed to join Japanese team Vissel Kobe. Nonetheless, the ex-Blaugrana man believes he wasn't given enough chances:
"I would have liked more opportunities at Barca. But they sign the best players in the world and that creates a break in the youth players."
However, Sergi is now set to get back in form. In 15 games he has played since joining Kobe, the midfielder has already managed to score a goal. Moreover, he is sharing the same pitch as Andres Iniesta and David Villa, two players that could help him significantly improve his game.Samper back in his Barcelona days:
