Valverde pushes Puig to 'take a step further'

Ernesto Valverde heaps praise on 19-year-old Riqui Puig after his brilliant display in the 2-1 Chelsea defeat on Tuesday. The boss says on the youngster, as quoted by Marca: "Then there is Riqui Puig, who is very lively, who has good moves and who can always unbalance the opposition. We want him to take a step further to create more danger, but he is a player who is always there."
Puig lasted for the first 45 minutes against Chelsea. However, the youngster insists he still belongs to the reserves' side, as quoted by Diario Sport: "I'm a more mature player now. I'm still a Barca B player and I'm here to grow. Older players help me a lot."
Given Barcelona's abundance in the midfield, it would be really difficult for Riqui Puig to make a breakthrough into the Blaugrana first team. There are currently nine seniors who are capable of playing in the midfield,
Last season, Puig made three appearances for the Barcelona seniors. He played for 35 minutes in the Copa del Rey fixture against Cultural Leonesa. It took him just some moments to provide his debut assist on Denis Suarez's goal. The midfield also accumulated 152 minutes over two La Liga matches.
