A day in Blaugrana history: Messi wears the iconic No.10 shirt for the first time
- Before the start of the 2008/2009 campaign, the Argentinean had a No.19 jersey at Barca.
- However, he took this shirt number for the first time in the 6-0 friendly win over Hibernian.
It was exactly on July 24 when Lionel Messi switched from the No.19 Barcelona jersey to his iconic No.10 kit. Previously, this shirt number belonged to Ronaldinho, Messi's friend and mentor. However, he left for AC Milan before the start of the 2008/2009 campaign.
The first time Messi wore the No.10 shirt for Barcelona was on July 24, 2008. The Catalans faced Scottish side Hibernian in a pre-season friendly and beat them 6-0.
Messi's debut season as a Blaugrana No.10 saw the Argentinean scooping the legendary Sextulpe as Barcelona won every single trophy in 2009. In total, he scored 42 goals in 54 matches in all competitions.
