Sport: Barca allegedly have no regrets over Xavi Simons' departure
- The Catalans lost their precious starlet to PSG.
- However, Barcelona-based top source now claim he was kept at Barca simply for 'marketing' purpose.
- Moreover, the Catalans never considered the 16-year-old to be a key part of the future.
On Tuesday, the inevitable was confirmed. Barcelona have lost one of their brightest La Masia graduates, Xavi Simons, to Paris Saint-Germain. The 16-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Parisians
However, Barcelona-based newspaper Diario Sport insist the Catalan giants have no regrets over Xavi Simons' departure. Apparently, he was kept at the club for 'marketing' purpose only. In fact, they even claim Barcelona never considered the 16-year-old to be a key part of the future. Even though he became a starter at Cadete A, it only happened because of Jorge Alastuey's season-ending injury.
Xavi Simons' departure is partly attributed to Mino Raiola's damaging influence. Rumour has it, the super-agent advised the Dutchman against signing a renewal with Barcelona unless they have offered him a hefty new deal. The terms were allegedly unacceptable by the Catalan giants. According to Sport, they didn't even want to renew Xavi but decided to change their original plan for the sake of the youngster.
Sport quote an unnamed Barcelona source close to the La Masia association as saying after Xavi's departure: "Now we can breathe easily."
