Samper: De Jong's arrival won't be a problem for Barca homegrown players
- The former Barca star is impressed with the 22-year-old even though his arrival hints at the potential neglection of the Academy graduates.
- He believes the Dutchman will adapt quickly given undeniable skills.
- Samper also speculates on whether De Jong manages to replace Sergio Busquets in the future.
Sergi Samper hasn't managed to become a Barcelona regular despite going through the ranks of the famous La Masia Academy. In his exclusive interview with Diario Sport, he highlights the importance of the integration of the homegrown players. However, he also shares his view on the recent acquisition of Frenkie de Jong.
Barcelona have spent 75 million euros on the 22-year-old midfielder despite having both Carles Alena and Riqui Puig within their ranks. This transfer could be considered rather questionable as it may hint at the neglection of the Catalans' own graduates.
Samper, for his part, doesn't think so. He praises the Dutchman: "De Jong is a great player. No one doubts that and he'll adapt quickly. He's very talented and in that regard, it won't be a problem. He's compatible with other academy players."
Former Barca graduate outlines De Jong's best traits: "I like his movement the most. He's very intelligent, how he protects the ball, how he runs, he's always in the right place, offering an outlet for his teammates. He's very complete."
Finally, Samper speculates on which position De Jong could occupy at Barca: "Against Chelsea, he played as a pivot. It's an option. I see him more as an interior but he could adapt to the other role as well."
De Jong made his first-team debut in Tuesday's friendly against Chelsea. He didn't manage to prevent Barcelona from a disappointing 2-1 defeat, however, his appearance after the break brought the much-needed control to the midfield zone. After all, the 22-year-old didn't misplace a single pass. In 45 minutes, he attempted 42 passes and completed each of them.
