FC Barcelona face Andres Iniesta's current side Vissel Kobe on Saturday as part of their pre-season summer tour to Japan. Earlier on Tuesday, they played against Chelsea and sadly lost 2-1 despite rather impressive debuts of Antoine Griezmann, Frenkie de Jong and Neto.
During the press conference ahead of the Vissel Kobe game, Ernesto Valverde reveals that one of the Barcelona first-team players won't be able to feature. This is Gerard Pique. The club's official media confirm that the defender has been suffering from some discomfort in his left thigh after the Chelsea loss.
Valverde is quoted as saying: "Pique won't play, as a precaution above all."
Barcelona lost 2-1 to Chelsea with Ivan Rakitic pulling one goal back shortly before the final whistle. During the preseason, the Catalans will also face Arsenal in the traditional Joan Gamper Trophy at the Camp Nou stadium and travel to the United States for the double-header friendly against Napoli.
The Vissel Kobe match is scheduled for Saturday, July 27. Kick-off is at 11:00 AM CET.
As for Pique, he could be happy with his figures from the previous campaign. The veteran defender was one of the most-used players in La Liga. In his absence, Barca visibly struggled to keep control over games.
In total, Pique made 52 appearances for the Catalan giants in all competitions during the 2018/2019 campaign. He scored seven goals and provided four assists.
