BREAKING: Date of Barca's season opener changed
- The conflict between the La Liga and Spanish FA officials has caused some havoc.
- The Monday and Friday fixtures are no longer allowed in Spain.
- That's why Barcelona will play their first game of the 2019/2020 league campaign on Saturday instead of Friday.
- The Catalans travel to Athletic Club on Saturday, August 17, as per the most recent update.
The 2019/2020 La Liga campaign starts in three weeks. However, the heated tensions between the Spanish FA (RFEF) and La Liga officials has been causing some havoc recently. For example, the date and time of Barcelona's season-opening fixture against Athletic Bilbao have been recently changed.
Barca's first game of the new campaign was originally supposed to take place on Friday, August 16 with the kick-off time set at 21:00 CET. The Spanish FA, meanwhile, demand the matches in the Spanish league to be played on Saturday and Sunday only. The Monday and Friday fixtures should no longer stand.
That's why Barcelona's season opener against Athletic Club away will now take place on Saturday, August 17 with the new kick-off time set at 20:45 CET. This information has been confirmed by the club's official account and the most recent statement from the Spanish FA as well.
La Liga officials, however, remain firm in their stance to keep the Monday and Friday fixtures. They accuse the Federation of the illegal 'attack'. In any case, a new hearing regarding this issue is set to take place on August 7. Until then, Barca start their 2019/2020 La Liga campaign away at Athletic on Saturday, August 17.
