Sergi Roberto on his return to midfield: 'I will play wherever Valverde says'
- Although nominally a midfielder, Sergi has been used as a right-back for the past few seasons.
- During the two pre-season friendlies in Japan, Valverde put him back in midfield.
- The 27-year-old claims he is happy to play wherever as long as he feels important.
When he had been only promoted to the first team, many saw Sergi Roberto as a Sergio Busquets back-up. However, following Dani Alves' injury back in 2015-16, the Spaniard had to adapt to a new role, as then-Blaugrana coach Luis Enrique started using Roberto in Dani's position. Following that, the Spain international became a regular on the right flank even competing with Nelson Semedo for the starting spot.
Nonetheless, three seasons later, it looks like Ernesto Valverde is set to used Sergi in his old position, as the 27-year-old featured in midfield against both Chelsea and Vissel Kobe. When asked about his 'new old role', the player seemed unbothered:
"It will be good news if I play, if not, it will not be such good news. I want to play and feel important in this team and help it."
"I am ambitious, what I want to play, there are many players in the center of the field but I what I want to play and wherever the coach decides, there will be a game, what I want is to help the team. It is good to compete with the best, we are in a club where we all have to help each other, add and be better than last year."
On Frenkie De Jong:
"He's good, very good, it is very easy to play by his side, he is a very high-level player, he associates very well, plays at the first touch, has the perfect profile for Barca ".
On playing against Iniesta, Samper and Villa:
"I', happy to see them on the field, but it has made me strange to see them play with a different shirt."
Do you think Roberto can succeed in midfield?
