Shouldn't we put more trust in youth players & 3 more burning questions to Valverde following Kobe win
Barcelona finished the first half of their pre-season by beating Vissel Kobe 2-0. Following the win, there are several questions head coach Ernesto Valverde will have to address.
1. Will Barcelona B players continue featuring during the season following their impressive performances?
Carles Perez was the one to steal the show in the Vissel Kobe games scoring both goals in Barca's 2-0 win. However, besides the winger, midfielder Riqui Puig and left-back Guillem Jaime put in decent performances, with the latter assisting Perez's first goal. Considering this, do they perhaps deserve to get more chances next season. Last season, as a reminder, Valverde started using B players only late in May when La Liga had already been secured.
2. What about the right-back position?
During the two friendlies, against Chelsea and Kobe respectively, Nelson Semedo played 45 minutes in his beloved position. However, then the Portuguese was not on the pitch, the right-flank was covered by Oriol Busquets or Monchu. Although they didn't perform too shabbily, both Oriol and Monchu are midfielders and not full-backs. Do Barcelona need to buy a new right-back or will Mussa Wague be trusted with the back-up role?
3. Is Sergi Roberto a midfielder again?
Considering that the right-back position had been covered by B players in Semedo's absence while Roberto played in midfield, it seems like Ernesto plans to put the 27-year-old back in his nominal position. However, the midfield already seems overcrowded, Barca already have seven mids at the club. Is it a good idea to bring Sergi back in midfield or should he perhaps continue playing on the right?
4. Will the defensive 4-1-4-1 work with Leo Messi on the pitch?
During the two Japan games, we had the opportunity to witness a new defensive set-up from Valverde, the 4-1-4-1. This formation, although easy to transform to the classic 4-3-3, has several setbacks. For example, does it mean that Messi will get a more defensive role when Barca are out of possession or will the Argentine return to his 'false nine' role with Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele occupying the flanks?
What question would YOU ask the coach?
