AS: Valverde pushes for Firpo's transfer
- Apparently, the boss wants the left-back to be with the team for the pre-season tour to the US.
- Still, Firpo's injury history remains an issue.
- Moreover, the financial aspects of the whole operation could pose a problem as well.
It seems that Real Betis' Junior Firpo is the chosen one to strengthen Barcelona's left-back position. Madrid-based Diario AS insist Ernesto Valverde is the driving force behind this transfer. Moreover, the coach wants the move to be completed already next week.
Apparently, the Blaugrana boss plans to include the 22-year-old in the travelling squad to face Napoli in the pre-season tour in the United States with the first game scheduled for August 7.
Still, AS notice that Firpo's injury history may be a worrying sign for the Barcelona boardroom. Last season, he missed almost three months due to a series of muscle injuries. Hamstring and thigh issues made the left-back unavailable for the Real Betis selection between late December and early April.
Finally, the financial aspects of the whole operation could pose a problem for the Catalan giants. The 22-year-old has recently penned a new deal with Betis which only expires in 2023. There is a €50million release clause included in his contract. Barcelona, meanwhile, are only willing to pay €20million for the left-back, as per various sources.
