Gerson's agent reveals Barcelona had reached an agreement for his client THREE years ago
- Roma signed the central midfielder for €18.6m in the summer of 2016.
- He only managed to score two goals in 42 appearances over two seasons with the Giallorossi who shipped him back to Brazil.
- Gerson's agent regrets accepting Roma's offer in the first place: "Barcelona wanted Gerson and reached a purchase agreement."
Apparently, back in 2016, Barcelona were linked with Fluminense central midfielder Gerson. Back then, he was only 19 years old. However, he eventually joined AS Roma for €18.6million despite strong interest from Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona.
Gerson failed to impress at the Olimpico stadium as he only scored two goals in 42 appearances over two seasons for the Giallorossi. This summer, the 22-year-old returned to native Brazil as he was signed by Flamengo for €11.8million.
And now Gerson's agent-father Marcao reveals in an interview with Globoesporte he should have agreed on the Barcelona move instead. He says: "Barcelona wanted Gerson and reached a purchase agreement. That was until I checked into the Fluminense offices one day and their President told me Roma had made a special offer, a ‘magic’ one. He told me that the club were in financial difficulty, with some people not even being paid."
Marcao finishes up: "I then went to meet them and accepted their offer. Now I’m much more experienced and I probably wouldn’t do it again."
Gerson's figures from his 2018/2019 campaign with Fiorentina prove that he isn't a finished prospect yet. He scored three goals in 40 games and provided four assists. In any case, Barcelona won't need another midfielder within their ranks given there is already an abundance in this area.
Curiously, Gerson's only two goals for AS Roma arrived against his future team Fiorentina.
