Happy birthday Riqui Puig: La Masia biggest talent turns 20
- Riqui turned 20.
- The midfielder is believed to be one greatest prospect produced by Barca academy.
- Riqui is likely to leave the club on loan.
Riqui Puig turns 20 on today, on Tuesday, August 13!
The young midfielder is, perhaps, one of the brightest stars to come out of La Masia in recent years. Riqui impressed already last season. He played for 35 minutes in the Copa del Rey fixture against Cultural Leonesa. It took him just some moments to provide his debut assist on Denis Suarez's goal. The midfield also accumulated 152 minutes over two La Liga matches.
Interestingly, Puig was born in Matadepera, a small village outside of Terrassa, the same town one and only Xavi Hernandez grew up in.
That's why there is no wonder that Xavi and Riqui Puig's family may have spent some time together on the vacations. Just take a look at his adorable picture of Xavi together with Riqui and his brother.
The starlet has spent the pre-season with the senior squad. Although Ernesto Valverde recognized the youngster's potential, the coach considers it is too early for him to make a permanent move to the first team. In a recent press conference, Ernesto said that the club and Puig should agree on a loan move:
"The loan will only be possible if it is valued by the club and him. He is a player with great potential, I will try to make the best eleven to win with the players I have."
Puig earlier said, however, he would like to stay, as quoted by Marca: "This is the best club in the world and I'd like to stay here. I won't close any doors, but I'd like to stay here I will continue to work like usual. I'll train the days [with the first-team squad] that they tell me to and, if they give me the opportunity, I'll do my best."
Given Barcelona's abundance in the midfield, it would be really difficult for Riqui Puig to make a breakthrough into the Blaugrana first team. There are currently nine seniors who are capable of playing in the midfield, including this summer's €75million arrival Frenkie de Jong.
According to local media El Periodico de Aragon, Real Zaragoza have approached Barcelona in order to secure the signing of Puig. Their manager Victor Fernandez has held a personal meeting with the Blaugrana officials to state his point. He believes Zaragoza would be ideal for the player's eventual progress as he will be certain to get minutes there.
We wish Riqui all the best in his career and hope to see him starting for Barca soon!
