Cadena SER: Messi is definitely OUT of La Liga season opener against Bilbao
- Leo continues his recovery in Barca facilities.
- However, the forward is set to miss the clash against Athletic on Friday.
- Instead, he is aiming to make himself fit for the first Camp Nou game this season - against Betis next week.
Lionel Messi has been out of action since last Monday due to a right calf injury he got during his first training session this summer. Leo didn't travel with the entire squad to the United States and revealed via his official media accounts that he would be "out for a while".
Nevertheless, as soon as next day Leo started his work towards the recovery aiming to get back on track in time for Barcelona's league opener on Friday, August 16, against Atheltic Bilbao.
Unfortunately, according to the latest update from a reliable Cadena SER, the clash against the Basques comes a little bit too soon for the Barca captain. Instead of being rushed for the La Liga opener, Messi will focus on getting fully fit for the first competitive game of the season at the Camp Nou against Real Betis next week.
It has always been clear that Barcelona wouldn't risk an injury relapse with Leo for the Bilbao clash. When asked about the physical conditions of the Argentine while on the US tour, Ernesto Valverde was very cautious not to give Barca fans the false hope.
As was confirmed by La Liga, Barcelona will face Athletic Bilbao away at San Mames on Friday, August 16, 21:00 CET. And Barca boss will have another riddle to solve with the Argentine unavailable.
