De Jong has no doubts about who should win the Ballon d'Or between van Dijk and Messi
- The centre-back is being backed to lift Ballon d'Or ahead of Messi after his excellent season with Liverpool.
- However, for de Jong there is no question: Mes is the best and incomparable.
- For Frenkie, it's a privilege to play with Leo.
Frenkie de Jong gives an exclusive interview to La Vanguardia where he discusses the competition between Leo Messi and his Netherlands teammate Virgil Van Dijk for the Ballon d'Or. Both are considered the favourites for the most prestigious individual award in football.
"For me, Messi is certainly the best in the world, the best I've seen," Feenkie admits (h/t Barcacentre).
"Van Dijk is an amazing, great defender, but you can't compare him to Messi, who is by far the best. The problem is that Messi is compared to Messi and he is expected to score five goals in each game, and, that is impossible.
"Playing with Messi is an extra, the most decisive thing when I signed here was that I loved Barca as a child," the midfielder concludes.
Messi is currently only second in the 2019 Golden Ball pursuit, as supposed by various media sources.
Despite making a great impression during his club campaign last season, the Argentinian messed up his personal stats after an unlucky Champions League and Copa America experience. Barcelona forward has been magnificent within La Liga though, scoring 36 times and making 13 assists overall.
Van Dijk is called the best candidate for the most prestigious football award of the year. The 27-year-old has had a consistent season full of glorious episodes, including winning the Champions League trophy with Liverpool.
The last time the trophy was given to a centre-back dates back to 2006 when the World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro was called the best player in the world.
