- However, now it appears that he will join Ajax instead.
- The Dutch team will pay Dinamo Zagreb 22 million euros for the forward.
- Zagreb would also receive 40% from a future sale of the player.
- Olmo will sign with Ajax until 2024.
Dani Olmo, La Masia graduate who Barca have been closely following this summer, nears the move to Ajax according to a reliable Gazzetta dello Sport reporter Nicolo Schira.
The 21-year-old promising striker who left La Masia for the Dinamo Zagreb youth team in the summer of 2014 for just 200,000 euros was the star player of Spain U21 side who have just scooped the European Championship title after beating Germany 2-1 in the final.
Ajax are expected to pay 22 million euros for Olmo plus Zagreb would receive 40% from any future sale. The forward will sign a contract until 2024 with Eredivisie champions.
In an interview with Madrid-based broadcaster COPE earlier this summer, Dani has admitted that his objective is to join a big club with Barca, of course, being a potential destination.
"Barca is the club I hold a special bond with," Dani said.
"It was my home for six years. We'll see what the future brings. Today, I don't know if there's a chance I could go back but, out of respect for other interested sides, I can't say anything."
"If that's a possibility, we'll see. As of right now, I don't know if that's possible or not."
Olmo has proven his worth during the 2019 European Championship between the U21 sides. He didn't play in the opening fixture against Germany which resulted in a disappointing 3-1 defeat. However, he was involved in the following matches, moreover, he scored or assisted in each of his further four appearances, including a winner in the final against Germany.
As for Dinamo Zagreb, Olmo scored 12 goals in 44 games for the Croatian champions last year. There have been strong rumours on Olmo's potential Barcelona return as he could be allowed to leave for a transfer fee in between 25 and 30 million euros. Still, there is a doubt he could get a place in the starting line-up due to the potential arrival of either Antoine Griezmann or Neymar.
