5 key stats to know ahead of Champions League draw on Thursday
Here we go again! Barcelona will start the pursuit for the cherished trophy on Thursday as all their group opponents will be announced. Here's what you need to know ahead of the new campaign.
Most appearances in group stage
Since the tournament had been modified back in 1992/93, Barcelona made 24 appearances in the group stage which rank them No.1 alongside Real Madrid. The Catalans didn't manage to reach play-off stage four times since that time.
Most frequent play-off participants
20: this is the number of times Barcelona advanced to the final stages of the tournament. What's more, Blaugrana has been finishing the group stage as the group winners since 2007/08. What concerns Real Madrid, the Blancos have qualified 16 times since the tournament emerged.
Camp Nou as a fortress
The Catalans are unbeaten on their home ground for a stunning number of 32 games. The lucky streak started back in 2013 when Barcelona beat Ajax 4-0.
Any new names in the draw?
Barcelona have never played an official fixture against Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg, Red Bull Leipzig, Lille, Atalanta and Genk. Also, possible contenders for the group stage spots LASK Linz, Slavia Prague and Cluj could face Barca for the first time ever.
Where will we (hopefully) play the final?
The match to reveal the tournament winner will be held at Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. The last time this stadium hosted the Champions League final was back in 2005 when Liverpool and Milan played in one of the most thrilling finals ever.
By the way, this could Barca's longest trip (more than 2,000 km) in UEFA tournaments history after the UEFA Super Cup in 2015 which was held in Tbilisi as Barcelona defeated Sevilla in an exciting clash which ended 5-4.
