Rio Ferdinand believes van Dijk winning UEFA award over Messi was unfair
- Virgil has recently won the UEFA POTY award beating Messi and Ronaldo.
- The ex-United defender believes it was unfair.
- 'When a man scores 50 goals in a season like Messi, you can't look beyond that,' said Rio.
The Dutchman is a current Champions League title holder with Liverpool. Besides the UEFA accolade, the 28-year-old won PFA Players' Player of the Year award and reached UEFA Nations League final with the resurgent Netherlands national team last season.
However, ex-Manchester United defender and current pundit believes it was unfair:
"There’s no doubt in my mind Virgil van Dijk is the best defender on the planet today
"But when a man scores 50 goals in a season like Messi or when Cristiano wins three trophies in a season, you can’t look beyond that."
Despite his praise for the Argentine, however, Ferdinand believes Ronaldo should be the one to win the Ballon d'Or this season because of his achievements with Juventus and the Portugal national team.
Do you think Ronaldo's achievements are enough to beat Messi to the Ballon d'Or?
