On transfer deadline day, Barcelona announced the acquisition of Las Palmas youngster Pedri. The 16-year-old will continue with the Islanders for the 2019-20 season on loan. Next summer, he is expected to either join the B side or Barca's first team.
Recently, Catalan-based outlet Diario Sport invited Pedri's ex-coach Angel Lopez, the man who discovered Pedri and brought him to Las Palmas, to an exclusive interview.
How did you discover Pedri?
"It caught my attention a lot when I saw him train and play last season two or three games with youth B, a team that I already followed before training him. I've never been so surprised by a kid, but he impressed me a lot."
And what caught your attention the most?
"The way he stood out playing with teammates bigger than him. It's not that you didn't notice the difference, but it's how much he stood out!"
And you told Pepe Mel [Las Palmas coach] ...
"Yes, they needed someone on the flank and I thank him for listening to my advice, he was my coach at Betis and we have a trusting relationship.
"Pepe was very brave, give him the chance to play already in the pre-season and I remember matches against First Division teams - one was against Betis - that at the end, rival players came to the locker room of the UD Las Palmas to take an interest in the kid."
What are his main strengths?
"There are few kids at that age who can handle the ball with such calmness, control the ball and at the same time play with the head raised and make the best pass. In addition, he is ready to sacrifice himself, although he is at a level higher than the rest he thinks about the collective and puts his leg in, he is not afraid.
What do you think is his best position on the pitch?
"He can play on both flanks without any problem because he is ambidextrous. He can also play in the middle."
