Leo Messi has been voted as the best International Footballer of the Year at the ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) 2019 awards.
The Argentinian has had an excellent 2018/19 season on an individual level, ending the Champions League campaign as a top goalscorer (12). He was named as the UEFA Forward of the Season thanks to his classy display in the tournament but missed out on UEFA Men's Player of the Year award, which went to Virgil van Dijk.
Overall, Leo scored 54 and assisted 20 goals in 58 games played for Barcelona and the national team on course of 2018/19 campaign.
Messi has thanked the voters for choosing him over other candidates - like Ronaldo, Mbappe and van Dijk - via a post on his Instagram account:
"Thank you very much to all who voted for me as Best Male International Soccer Player in the 2019 ESPY Awards. I send you a hug👌🏻😉🏆" the forward said.
On Monday, it has also been revealed that Leo Messi tops the FIFA rankings with a whooping rating of 94.
