Messi explains why Barca were right to keep Valverde after last season disaster
- Barca's 2018/19 season put Valverde's future under question.
- However, Leo Messi takes the coach's side.
- According to the forward, the players are to blame for the underwhelming Champions League campaign ad not the manager.
After the 2018/19 season that saw Barca crashing out of the Champions League after a nightmare 4-0 loss against Liverpool in the semi-finals and losing Copa del Rey final to Valencia, serious questions were raised over Ernesto Valverde's future at the club.
At some point, reliable sources like RAC1 were claiming that the Basque specialist was certain to leave the Camp Nou.
In the recent interview with Diario Sport, Leo Messi indirectly confirmes that such an opportunity was indeed considered by the club:
"When these things happen, everyone thinks the worst because we didn’t complete our objectives. Something similar happened in the previous year too although I believe it was worse on this occasion," Leo said.
However, according to the 32-year-old, it's the team and not the coach who is to blame for Barca struggles:
"As I said at the moment, we (the players) are to blame. The coaching staff had nothing to do with the performance we put in. Until that moment we had a great season, dominating the league from the first moment, making the final of the Copa del Rey. It was more an issue with us than with the coaching team."
Meanwhile, Barcelona's start of the 2109/20 hasn't been perfect either with just one win in the first three games. At the moment they are 5 points behind the leaders, Atletico.
