3 Ways Barca could afford Mbappe signing?
Recently, Mundo Deportivo linked Barcelona with a possible move for Kylian Mbappe as an alternative for Neymar. The 20-year-old is one of the most expensive players in the world. However, we believe there still are three ways for Barca to sign him.
In order to make a big-money signing, the Catalans would first need to sell someone for a big sum. Coutinho still remains a Blaugrana player despite joining Bayern Munich on loan. The Bavarians have the option to sign him on a permanent transfer next summer for €120m. His exit will depend on how he performs this season.
As for Dembele, the player's current market price is set at €100m (Transfermarkt). His value decreased over the last year due to his poor performances and frequent injuries. However, should the 22-year-old put in a decent season, his market value could once again go back to €120m.
2. Offer a swap deal
Just like Barca tried with Neymar this summer, the club could offer a player plus cash deal. Coutinho and Dembele could once again find themselves among those who could be offered in exchange for the Frenchman. Moreover, players like Ivan Rakitic or Jean-Clair Todibo, who had been linked with a possible move to PSG this summer, might be considered once again as exchange coin.
3. Wait, wait and wait
It is obvious that Barca won't try to sign the 20-year-old during the January transfer window. And if they do plan a bid for the forward, it is going to be next summer. Currently, Transfermarkt value the 20-year-old at €200m.
Not rushing to make an official bid is actually a good strategy because Mbappe's contract with PSG expires in 2022. The closer the player is to being a free agent, the lower his actual market value is.
And even if Blaugrana miss out on Kylian next summer, the club could return for the French international in summer of 2021, with Mbappe having only one more year left of contract. This would mean that PSG either accept a lower fee or risk losing him for nothing at all in 2022. Although you should keep in mind that this strategy only works as long as Mbappe doesn't renew his contract.
